On Friday (May 10) the United Nations General Assembly in New York voted for the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Among the 193 countries of the United Nations, 143 countries including Bangladesh voted for the country. 9 countries voted against the proposal. And 25 countries abstained from voting. This information was given in a report of the news agency Reuters.
According to media reports, the proposal does not grant Palestine full membership of the United Nations, but only recognizes them as eligible to join.
Although Palestine may not be granted full membership of the United Nations, the country will get some additional benefits from September this year as a result of Friday's resolution. For example, seats in the General Assembly will be reserved for Palestine like other member states. But they cannot vote on any proposal.
Earlier, a resolution was tabled in the Security Council last week to create an independent Palestinian state and grant them full membership. The proposal was not accepted due to the US veto there.
A proposal was then made to the General Assembly to hold another vote in the Security Council to recognize Palestine and give it full membership.
And three out of four UN member countries have voted in favor of this proposal.
The Gaza war has been going on for more than seven months. More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks.
On the other hand, 1,200 Israelis were killed in Hamas attacks. In this war to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the issue of bilateral reconciliation is again being discussed.
The essence of the two-state solution is that two independent states, Israel and Palestine, will live side by side.
Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported that today's vote was important for Palestine. Because, through it they got several rights.
Palestine will now be able to introduce or support and amend resolutions in the General Assembly.
Also, Palestinian representatives will now be able to sit in the seats of member states and Palestine will be able to actively participate in the session.
In addition, the fact that most of the countries in the world are in favor of Palestine has been revealed again through this vote.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the UN vote by commenting that the world stands by the Palestinian people.
He said, 'the passage of the resolution proved that the world stands with the rights and freedom of the Palestinian people and against the Israeli occupation.'
